Today is Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th birthday. I still fondly remember playing this game as a child, and then coming home each day from Kindergarten to find my younger brother at the exact same spot in Sonic 2, waiting for me to pick up the remote as he played as Tails. This was before the days of save-states and memory cards :). In celebration of our favorite pudgy hedgehog’s birthday, I’ve collected sound pieces from his many soundtracks. I mean really, how can you not love this guy? Sure, he’s been on a bit of a downward spiral since the late 90’s, but we all hit a bump in the road sooner or later.
Over the years, these have proven to be some of the most outstanding pieces of music to ever grace our ears from within a video game, as seen by the thousands of covers and iterations found on YouTube. If these songs don’t tickle that nostalgic string in your heart, then I don’t know what will. My personal favorite sonic titles of all time? Why Sonic 1 and Sonic CD of course. I’ve only recently (three weeks ago) beat Sonic 2, despite having it since the day it launched in 1992.
