Great episode of Planet Money on NPR this week:
What was going on in 1984 that made so many women give up on computer science?
They illustrate the barriers of entry that many people faced in the 80s. Notably, many men picked up computers because they could be assembled from kits at Radio Shack — a store generally packed with men, not women.
From there, men had an upper hand during entry level computer science courses, because they had already been using computers for years.
