Welcoming the Xamarin team to Microsoft

As part of this commitment I am pleased to announce today that Microsoft has signed an agreement to acquire Xamarin, a leading platform provider for mobile app development.

In conjunction with Visual Studio, Xamarin provides a rich mobile development offering that enables developers to build mobile apps using C# and deliver fully native mobile app experiences to all major devices – including iOS, Android, and Windows. Xamarin’s approach enables developers to take advantage of the productivity and power of .NET to build mobile apps, and to use C# to write to the full set of native APIs and mobile capabilities provided by each device platform.

What does this mean for you?

I’m not quite sure. I’ve just learned of this news as well. What is interesting about this is that some of your favorite middleware tools, such as Unity, run on Mono, which the Xamarin team is behind. This is the open source implementation of Microsoft’s .NET framework.

MonoGame, the open source version of XNA, Microsoft’s now deprecated C# gaming framework, ALSO runs on Xamarin’s Mono platform. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but I’ll keep you in the loop!

You can find more info about this at Scott Guthrie’s blog.
