I don’t really use this blog to discuss film or TV, but I’ve always had a passion for it, and saw 3 great films in theaters this past week, so why not blog about them? My local theater, the Bryn Mawr Film Institute held classes and discussions for Alien (’79) and Aliens (’86) last week.
I returned from Terminator 2 (3D) this evening, and although I’ve always been very skeptical of 3D in film after seeing the abomination that was Superman Returns (2006) in 3D, I swore off of it. Terminator however, did a fantastic job of adapting the 1991 film to 3D, and I have no idea of how they did it. It was also a 4k transfer.
This was the best use of 3D that I have ever seen in a film, and after seeing how well it was done, I really think it is something I would consider seeing in other films.
They corrected a couple of parts in the film as well. The scene where Arnold rides his motorcycle into the waterway in LA was done by a stunt driver, and in the original film it was obvious. This time around though, they superimposed Arnold’s face, and had I not have seen the film 100 times before, I would have never noticed this change.
Also, the tumble Arnold performs when he falls from the cryo-truck towards the end of the film had been shortened greatly. This was a welcome change, as it has always been the only special effect in the film that I thought felt out of place.
In terms of audio, it was crystal clear, although I was disappointed that only it only seemed to come from the front three speakers, so there was no soundstage coming from behind us – bizarre for such a high profile film.
